"Doubt is the father of invention" Galileo Galilei
On my Journey from Central St.Martins College to RCA I stopped by at the Serpentine Gallery only to meet three former college friends, all working at the Gallery as Interns (their way of getting a foot in the door). There happened to take place an event at the back of the building called Just a Minute: An A-Z of Doupt.
Not many people seemed to attend the event, one of my friends said, it was not worth seeing. I went anyway, here my impression, this is what it said on their Press Release:
Project from Curating Contemporary Art Students, RCA June 2007 in Serpentine Gallery London
Just a Minute: An A - Z of Doubt
Through our discussions, we have become aware that doupt has a pervasive presence in our profession: doubt about the future of public art funding, doubt about whether the boom in art market will last, doubt about the ever-expanding biennale circuit, doubts about the effects of a global art economy - is bigger better, is smaller better, will we run out of steam/ out of ideas, can creativity be packaged and sold? Outside the art world, society as a whole also appears riddled with doubts: about political transparency, war, immigration, the exportation of democracy, terrorism, national security, oil- will the planet survive, is global warming a man-made problem, is solar power the way forward are the answers still blowing in the wind?"
I was thinking, how funny that these curating students, rather than coming up with an interesting exhibition of artists that address the mentioned issues, when given the opportunity to create an event at famous Serpentine Gallery, created an event that almost questioned their own practice. An exhibition by curators about curators? No wonder no one was interested in the event, there were no artists there! I think it is about time young curators stop hiding in the back yard and start addressing the questions they raise by coming up with projects that feature artists who formulate and confront our society with the
mentioned ideas in an artistic way!
Here are a few Impressions:
