What can be done_9.9.07

W1 Thursday I went to an event called “Kunst ohne Werke” (art without works/objects).
W2 Invited were Hanswalter Graf, San Keller and Interpixel, hosted by Brita Polzer.
W3 The event took place in Cabaret Voltaire, a nightclub in
Zurich, Switzerland. It was founded by Hugo Ball, with his companion
Emmy Henning’s on February 5, 1916 as a cabaret for artistic and
political purposes. Other founding members were Marcel Janco, Richard
Huelsenbeck, Tristan Tzara and Jean Arp. Events at the cabaret proved
pivotal in the founding of the anarchic art movement known as Dada.

W4 I went to the event because the featured artists have a
similar practice to my own and I wanted to find out what their struggle
is. They make work that does not fit into traditional concepts of
art making, but engage in political actions, public interventions,
games or educational projects.
Facts:
- Immaterial art deals with other people’s affects rather than the artist’s own ones.
- It seems that an increasing number of artists are interested in art processes that deal with other people’s affects.
- Artists that make immaterial art get funds from public funding bodies or from commercial institutions.
Struggle:
-
Most funding for “Immaterial projects” only covers the material
part of the project i.e. artists do not get any money for their work,
research and organization. 95% of the actual project remains unpaid.
-
Artists that make process based work have difficulties getting access
to cultural spaces, museums, galleries, probably there is no real
return on investment, no objects to sell at the end of the project.
-
No real dialogue is happening around these issues, because there is no
“meeting point”. Meeting points are often in illegal locations, there
don’t seem to be any suitable places artists can meet to discuss
issues.
Question:
- Is there no use in the research artists undertake?
- Can knowledge be sold?
- What happens if old buildings get bought and turned into luxury apartments and shopping malls only?
